Funded cluster “FastBat”

The “Fast Battery Customization (FastBat)” cluster brings together partners from research and industry, including the PEM Chair at RWTH Aachen University and PEM Motion, to significantly accelerate the development and market introduction of innovative battery technologies. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) with around €50 million under the Coal Regions Investment Act, the project makes a key contribution to transforming the Rhenish region into a future-oriented technology hub.

At the core of FastBat are the reduction of development cycles and the creation of customized battery systems for specialized applications with high variability. By closely integrating research, digitalization, and industrial implementation, new approaches are being developed to achieve faster time-to-market and more flexible production. At the same time, a regional value chain for battery and recycling technologies is being established.

In addition to technological innovation, FastBat also pursues economic and sustainability goals. These include promoting the creation of new companies, generating skilled jobs, and improving environmental performance through more efficient production processes and extended battery lifecycles. Overall, the cluster makes an important contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of European battery technology and to the sustainable development of the region.

  • Funded project MatreEx

    The MatreEx project develops a solvent-free electrode manufacturing process for lithium-ion batteries to reduce costs, eliminate harmful materials, and enable scalable, sustainable production of high-energy cells.
