Is my battery cell sealing material compatible with the electrolyte solution?

Resistance test of sealing materials in E-Lyte quality!

Why are resistance tests of sealing materials in battery cells against liquid electrolytes important?

Resistance tests of sealing materials against liquid electrolyte solutions, which are installed in batteries for e.g. electric vehicles or other applications, are of particular importance! Seals play a key role when it comes to the longevity and safety of the installed battery cells. They keep the electrolyte solution in the cell and ensure that moisture or other contaminants cannot penetrate from the outside. If sealing materials are not resistant to the electrolyte solution, they can degrade or decompose over time. The decomposition of the sealing material leads to a leakage of the electrolyte solution and a chemical reaction with other installed materials. Depending on the intensity with which the reactions take place, this leads either to impairment in the operation of the cell or to destruction by, for example, a fire. In both cases, the cell cannot be operated over its normal life cycle.

Further reasons for the need for resistance testing of sealing materials installed in battery cells:

Durability testing ensures consistent performance of the battery cell throughout its life cycle. Leakage of the liquid electrolyte affects the cell’s performance as the concentration of the electrolyte solution decreases. This means that the cell no longer reaches its nominal capacity during charging and can therefore store less electrical energy.

Furthermore, leaked electrolyte solution can have an impact on the environment, as harmful chemicals can be released, causing environmental damage. So resistance testing also helps minimize environmental damage to battery cells with leaks.

Overall, resistance testing of sealing materials is an important part of battery design and manufacturing to ensure the safety, reliability and performance of batteries, especially in applications where battery failures can have serious consequences, such as in electric vehicles!

Qualify your material with a strong resistance study!

WORKSHOP

Is my battery cell sealing material compatible with the electrolyte solution?

E-Lyte offers custom-fit resistance studies for gasket manufacturers. Sealing materials in the battery cell inevitably come into contact with the introduced electrolyte solution. An unexpected reaction of the material with the electrolyte solution can have serious consequences as described. In order for your material to qualify for use in a battery cell, it should therefore be examined beforehand in a well-thought-out test scenario to determine its compatibility with the electrolyte system used.

In order to be able to define a target-oriented test scenario with a satisfactory result, we conducted a workshop with our project partners at the beginning of the collaboration.

Your advantages in booking a workshop with our qualified electrolyte and application specialist:

We should speak the same language!

Let’s make sure that we speak the same language when it comes to project planning. No one knows your product better than you do! In order for us to offer you a custom-fit solution, we first want to understand your product. The same applies to the electrolyte solution. The electrolyte is a complex chemical system. We want to give you an understanding of the composition of the electrolyte and the reactions that take place in the battery cell. After the workshop, both companies should have a clear understanding of the project partner’s product. We will further elucidate which components may trigger electrolyte decomposition and have a negative performance on the electrochemical performance of the cell

Set the right goals together!

We want to understand your motivation perfectly and support you with our experience to lead your project to maximum success. To do this, we jointly consider the goal you have set and critically examine whether this goal is sufficient for us to ensure that your material qualifies for use in the battery cell. During the workshop, based on your initial target and our expertise, we set targets for the durability tests that will qualify your material 100% for use in the battery cell.

Design of a custom-fit test study

If we speak the same language and have defined the right goals together, we can start with the design of a custom-fit study. In our workshop we lay the foundation for this.

Bennchmarking studies! What can I expect?

We have already screened many different materials ranging from elastomers for appropriate sealing of quick couplings in our barrels to stainless steel alloys for our reactor vessels. We will give you insight into completed consistency studies to give you a better understanding of the end result. Our goal is for you to have no unanswered questions after our joint workshop!
